What Is PromptSmith?

PromptSmith is an app for Windows, Mac and Android that turns one ordinary sentence into a well-built prompt for ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Perplexity and over 100 other AI models, with instructions that push the AI to stay honest.

Most people type something short and hope for the best. The AI then fills the gaps with confident guesses, invented facts, fake links and made-up quotes. PromptSmith writes the part everyone skips: a clear role, a clear task, rules that say “if you are not sure, say so,” a request for evidence, and a self-check before the final answer.

Each AI model likes a different layout, so PromptSmith formats the same request differently for each model you tick: tagged sections for Claude, clear headings for ChatGPT, context-first for Gemini, and scene-style prompts for image and video generators.

It all happens on your computer. What you type is never sent to us, there is no account, and there is no subscription. We only check your license key.

An honest note: a good prompt lowers the chance of made-up answers. It cannot remove it. Always check anything important.

Exactly What PromptSmith Does

You type one sentence. PromptSmith builds a complete, ready-to-paste prompt for every AI model you tick, all at once, without sending a word of it anywhere.

  • Reads your sentence and detects the task (explain, research, write, summarize, analyze or compare, extract data, code, plan, or general) and shows what it detected, so the role and rules fit the job. Each task type adds its own rules: for code, never invent libraries, functions or API endpoints; for summaries, add nothing that is not in the original text; for data extraction, output null instead of guessing. A word count and rough token count update as you type.
  • Writes the prompt in parts: a role (for example “expert teacher who explains accurately”), your task, the accuracy rules, a step-by-step process, and the output format. Nothing is left for the AI to guess.
  • Sets how hard it pushes against made-up answers with a three-way switch. Standard: say “I'm not sure” or “I don't know” instead of guessing, never invent facts, names, numbers, dates, quotes, links, citations or statistics, and state assumptions openly when the request is unclear. Strict (the default) adds: keep facts separate from inference, cite only sources it can name, flag anything outdated or after its knowledge cutoff, and re-read the answer and remove every claim it cannot support. Maximum adds: mark each key claim high, medium or low confidence and leave out anything below medium, prefer a shorter correct answer over a longer uncertain one, and point out false or unverifiable premises before answering.
  • Shapes the answer with dropdowns for task type, answer format (table, bullet points, step-by-step and more), length, aspect ratio for image and video models, audience (for example “busy managers”) and tone, plus checkboxes to ask up to three clarifying questions first, label claims with a confidence level, require a source (title and date) for every factual claim or the words “no source”, and add a self-check pass.
  • Adds eight optional guardrails: never invent links or web addresses; write today's date and warn about the knowledge cutoff; show calculations step by step and re-check each number; say plainly when a question cannot be answered; include the strongest counterargument; quote exact words instead of paraphrasing the source; use plain language and define jargon; stay on topic and skip unrequested extras.
  • Lets the AI use only your material. Paste an article, notes or data into Source material and the prompt wraps it in tags and tells the AI to answer only from it, to quote short supporting passages, and to reply “Not found in the provided material” when the answer is not there.
  • Formats the same request differently for each model you tick, side by side. Claude gets tagged sections (<role>, <task>, <source_material>, <accuracy_rules>, <answer>); Gemini gets context first, then the task, then constraints, with the question restated at the end; ChatGPT and similar chatbots get clear Markdown headings; image and video generators get scene-style prompts with aspect ratio. Pick from 130 models in six groups: chatbots and language models, search and research assistants, coding assistants and app builders, open-source and small models, 16 image generators and 9 video generators.
  • Scores every prompt out of 100. It checks for a role, a clear task, permission to say “I don't know,” an evidence rule, an output format and a self-check, then lists in plain words what is missing and how to fix it.
  • Improves prompts you already have. Switch to Improve my prompt, paste your old prompt, optionally say what to change, and get rebuilt versions that show the old score and the new score (for example 0/100 to 100/100).
  • Starts from 14 templates with {blanks}. Pick one, and a Fill in your blanks box appears with one field per blank.
  • Remembers your standing instructions (for example “I am a nurse. Use US spelling.”) and adds them to every prompt.
  • Saves everything. The last 30 prompts are kept automatically; star or save the ones you want to keep (up to 500); search them; export the whole library to a file and import it on another computer. Save your favorite combinations of models as named sets.
  • Copies in one click, or copies and opens Claude, ChatGPT, Gemini or Perplexity in your browser. Keyboard shortcuts: Ctrl/Cmd+Enter to generate, Ctrl/Cmd+S to save, Ctrl/Cmd+Shift+C to copy. Light, dark or automatic theme.
  • Works on your computer, not in the cloud. Windows 10/11, Mac (Apple Silicon and Intel) and Android. No account, no analytics. Your text never leaves your machine; only your license key is checked online.

Copy and go

One click copies the prompt. Another copies it and opens Claude, ChatGPT, Gemini or Perplexity for you.

What You Get

Anti-Hallucination Strength

Standard, Strict or Maximum. Maximum adds confidence labels, source rules, and a self-check pass before the final answer.

More Guardrails

No invented links, step-by-step math, today's date and knowledge-cutoff warnings, exact quotes, plain language, stay on topic, and a say-so-when-it-can't-be-answered rule.

Formatted Per Model

130 models across chatbots, search assistants, coding tools, open-source models, image and video generators, each with the layout that works best for it.

Improve My Prompt

Paste a prompt you already use. PromptSmith rebuilds it with the missing guardrails and lets you say what to change.

What Sets PromptSmith Apart

Most prompt tools help you write a nicer prompt. PromptSmith is built to write a more honest one.

Honesty is the product

The accuracy rules, the confidence labels, the “I don't know” permission and the self-check pass are the core of every prompt, not an extra you have to remember. We did not find any of the tools below advertising anything like this on their pricing or feature pages.

All your models at once

Tick several models and get a separately formatted prompt for each, side by side. Claude-only and OpenAI-only generators cannot do that, and they only write for their own models.

Your words stay yours

PromptSmith runs on your computer. There is no account to create, and what you type is never uploaded. Online generators have to receive your text to work.

Pay once

$29 one time, covers up to 3 devices, updates included. Several competing tools charge every month, or every year.

It shows its work

The prompt score tells you in plain words what a prompt is missing. No other tool in the table below lists a prompt score.

No keys, no credits, no limits

No API key to paste in, no credits that run out, no monthly request cap. Build as many prompts as you like.

Questions

Does it guarantee the AI will not make mistakes?

No. A good prompt makes mistakes less likely and makes the AI say when it is unsure, but it cannot remove them. Always check anything important.

Which AI models does it support?

130 models, including Claude, ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Grok, Mistral, Llama, coding assistants, and image and video generators. PromptSmith makes the prompt; you paste it into the model you use.

Is what I type sent to you?

Never. Your sentences, prompts and library stay on your computer. The app only contacts our license server to start the trial, activate and re-check your license, and GitHub for an update check. See the Privacy Policy.

Can I try it first?

Yes. PromptSmith is free for 7 days with every feature, and no credit card is needed. The trial is available on Windows and Mac only, is tied to your computer and can be used once. The Android version has no trial and needs a license key. On day 7 it locks until you enter a license key.

How does the license work?

It is a one-time purchase with no subscription. You receive a license key by email that keeps PromptSmith running after the trial, and can be activated on up to 3 of your devices in total (Windows, Mac or Android). If you replace a device, use Help → Deactivate This Computer on Windows or Mac, or Deactivate this device in the Android app, to free up the key, or contact support and we'll help.

Does it work offline?

Yes. Once activated, PromptSmith works without internet and checks your license again at least every 14 days.

Are updates included?

Yes. Your license covers updates for the current major version at no extra charge.

Can I get a refund?

Yes. Email us within 14 days of purchase for a full refund (see the Refund Policy). When a refund of any kind is issued, the license key for that purchase is deactivated.
